Symptoms of GERD

Not everyone with GERD will experience all these symptoms, and their severity can vary from person to person. If you suspect you have GERD or are experiencing any of these symptoms regularly, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and management. While anti acid medication can be a good first line of treatment, such medication is not a viable option for long term treatment, due to side effects and complications. Left untreated, GERD can lead to complications such as esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus, and even an   increased risk of esophageal cancer.

Heartburn

A burning sensation in the chest, often after eating or at night, is one of the hallmark symptoms of GERD. It can sometimes be mistaken for a heart-related issue.

Regurgitation

Sour or bitter-tasting stomach contents may flow back into the mouth or throat, causing an unpleasant taste.

Dysphagia

Dysphagia is a medical term that refers to difficulty or discomfort in difficulty swallowing or a sensation of food getting stuck in the throat. Dysphagia can be a symptom of underlying medical condition.

Chronic Cough

A persistent cough, especially at night, may be a symptom of GERD due to acid irritating the airways.

Sore Throat

Irritation from stomach acid can affect the vocal cords and throat, leading to hoarseness or a persistent sore throat.

Laryngitis

In laryngitis inflammation of the voice box (larynx) can result from acid reflux, causing voice changes.

Asthma

Some people with GERD may experience worsening of asthma symptoms or new-onset asthma due to the reflux of stomach acid into the airways.

Chest Pain

Although it is less common, chest pain associated with GERD can mimic the symptoms of a heart attack. It is essential to seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe chest pain to rule out any cardiac issues.

Sleep Disturbance

Nighttime acid reflux can disrupt sleep, leading to insomnia or frequent waking. Individuals experiencing persistent sleep problems should seek guidance from our expert healthcare professionals.

Different Causes of GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition where stomach acid consistently flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and inflammation. Several factors can contribute to the development of GERD, and it often results from a combination of these factors. Here are different causes of GERD:

Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach protrudes into the chest through the diaphragm, allowing acid to flow back into the esophagus more easily.

Dietary Factors

Certain foods and beverages, such as spicy, fatty, or acidic foods, alcohol, caffeine, and citrus, can trigger or exacerbate GERD symptoms.

Pregnancy

The pressure on the abdomen during pregnancy can cause acid reflux to occur more frequently.

Weak Lower Esophageal Sphincter

The LES is a ring of muscle that separates the esophagus from the stomach. If it weakens or relaxes abnormally, it can allow stomach acid to reflux into the esophagus.

Obesity

Excess weight can put pressure on the abdomen, increasing the likelihood of acid reflux, which can contribute to developing GERD.

Smoking

Smoking weakens the LES and can contribute to the development of GERD.
